"My Person" Thoughts

I wrote this song as a fun little tribute to my wife. It’s not as serious as some of the other love songs I’ve written, but I feel like that’s kind of what being in a relationship is like. Some experiences are serious and profound, but when you’re with the right person, most days are just fun and lighthearted. I like that “My Person” reflects that.

I started out this song with that little syncopated percussion beat. To me, this track is all about the rhythm. It keeps that driving pattern going in the soft verses, and then kind of turns it on its head in the choruses, which kind of explode out of nowhere.

This was actually the last song I decided to produce for the album. It lived as a rough demo in Dropbox for a year. The original felt cool to me, but I couldn’t figure out how to land on the hook. The melody was there, but everything felt super lame.

Still, the melodies kept me coming back, and I finally figured out what the song needed. Now, it’s one of my favorites!

LYRICS:

“My Person”

I'd like to tell you tell you

Do what you wanna do

Talking at a table

A table for two

If you can't quite find the words

We'll find another way to tell

Show each other something

We've kept to ourselves

If you want, if you want me to

I can be all you want

Baby I'd let you do me wrong

And you might, and you might assume

I'd do anything for you

You'd be right, you'd be right on that one

Baby I would lie with you

Til the morning comes

Girl we got nothing to do

And nowhere to run

Baby I would lie with you

Til the world's undone

And I don't even notice 'cause I think I found my person

I'm thinking of a number

Between one and a grand

I'm thinking I might ask ya

To hold your hand

If you're feeling like I do

There's no need to feel it out

I'm falling for ya baby

There's no doubt about it

If you want, if you want me to

I can be all you want

Baby I'd let you do me wrong

And you might, and you might assume

I'd do anything for you

You'd be right, you'd be right on that one

Baby I could lie with you

Til the morning comes

Girl we got nothing to do

And nowhere to run

Baby I would lie with you

Til the world's undone

No need to run in circles 'cause I think I found my person

Think I found my

I think I found my person

Think I found my

I think I found my person

Think I found my

I think I found my person

Think I found my

I think I found my person

"Be the Light" Thoughts

“Be the Light” is a song about doing positive things in your world. I feel like I’m constantly feeling overwhelmed by all of the things going wrong in the world, problems that seem way over my head. I wrote “Be the Light” to remind me that the only real thing I can do in this world is to put what good that I have into it. Whether it’s in a small way or a big way, bringing positivity into the lives of people, animals, and things around you matters.

The final production actually stayed pretty true to the original demo, except way bigger and better!

Stylistically, I had fun with this one. I love the super minimal verses and then the huge bass synth in the chorus that just slaps you in the face. It was so fun to lay down the ol’ trumpet on this one as well. Trumpet is one of those things that either works or it doesn’t, and on this song, it felt so locked in to me.

LYRICS:

“Be the Light”

Picture perfect no one is
For every hit, a hundred miss
You can't let it keep you down
Turn those weights into a crown

But everybody needs a little help sometimes
It ain't always easy to be strong inside
And even in the best yeah the best of times
We need each other

That's why I'm gonna be the light
Bring the Sun into this dark, dark night
That's why I'm gonna be the light
Open the door and then just go outside

Doesn't matter the place you're in
Any color of your skin
Everybody needs someone
The only way we move along

Cause everybody needs a little help sometimes
It ain't always easy to be strong inside
And even in the worst yeah the worst of times
We go high, we go high

That's why I'm gonna be the light
Bring the Sun into this dark, dark night
That's why I'm gonna be the light
Open the door and then just go outside

Sunlight, sunlight, sunlight
Sunlight, sunlight, sunlight
Sunlight, sunlight, sunlight
Sunlight, sunlight, sunlight

Sunlight, sunlight, sunlight
Sunlight, sunlight, sunlight
Sunlight, sunlight, sunlight
Sunlight, sunlight, sunlight

That's why I'm gonna be the light
Bring the Sun into this dark, dark night
That's why I'm gonna be the light
Open the door and then just go outside

"Luck" Thoughts

I just released my first single in a a couple years called “Luck”. This is actually a song I’ve been kicking around for a long time, since 2018. I’ve always really connected with the lyrics and I’ve always felt the production struck a certain chord with me. I went through soooooo many iterations of this track, originally in an alt-RnB style, and eventually landing on a more rock approach, which felt much truer to my roots.

This was the original demo. The verse melodies would be re-written several different times, but the hook remained!

I wrote the lyrics kind of as a protest against a lot of the things I don’t like in the music industry and also how it’s portrayed on social media. I wrote this at a time in my life where I was really coming to a realization of what I really wanted out of this career, and it wasn’t any of the things you’re “supposed” to aim for (fame, clout, etc). To me, a lot of those aims are wrapped up in promises made by “the Industry” (capital “I”), that really don’t reflect the reality of being a genuine artist. However, many artists I see kind of fall for this in one way or another. It all comes around to people wishing me the most common phrase I hear when I mention I’m a music, and that’s “Good Luck”. While I love the sentiment (I really do), I don’t feel like I need luck when I’ve learned how to work hard for myself and lean on those who care about me the most.

I hope everybody enjoys listening to “Luck” as much as I enjoyed creating it! Links and lyrics below:

Lyrics:

“Luck”

I don't need luck

I don't need luck

My life lying awake on the carpet

Wondering why I just can't to stop myself

Am I ever gonna grow up?

Am I gonna show my high school friends?

I could dream of being an idol

Getting my break yeah

Wait on these labels like they're going to change

Hanging with people I don't even like

Price I pay for ambition

People ask me why

I don't believe in karma

Wonder it's like

Living only for that drama

I don't need luck

When I got all my friends around me

I don't need luck

When I got all these stars above me

I don't need

I don't need luck

I'm only vibing with the lights off

We making memories not diamonds, yeah

Was told I'd never get this far

We own this life cuz we own our hearts

Why waste all my time

Up on a stage while

Millions of people call out my name

Hanging with people I don't even like

It's a human condition

I don't give a fuck

What's the right way to make it

People wish me luck

But what makes them think I need it?

I don't need luck

When I got all my friends around me

I don't need luck

When I got all these stars above me

I don't need

I don't need luck

All I need is you and me and everybody

Up all night until we shine, this vibrant energy

All I need is you and me and everybody

Up all night until we shine, this vibrant energy

I don't need luck

When I got all my friends around me

I don't need luck

When I got all these stars above me

I don't need

I don't need luck
